What Exactly Is Fetal Medicine and How Does It Help?
Fetal medicine is a specialized field focused on assessing the health and development of the unborn baby during pregnancy. It includes routine and advanced ultrasound scans, prenatal screening and diagnosis, high-risk pregnancy monitoring, and invasive or interventional procedures when required.
Most pregnancies progress without major complications. When concerns are identified, fetal medicine specialists work closely with obstetricians to evaluate the pregnancy, clarify the diagnosis and help plan further management.
For pregnancies with an increased chance of a chromosomal or genetic condition, diagnostic procedures such as amniocentesis or Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) may be recommended after appropriate counselling.
