Accurate Early Pregnancy Scan in Chennai (6-10 weeks)
An early pregnancy scan, also known as a dating scan or pregnancy confirmation scan, is usually the first ultrasound recommended during pregnancy.
This scan plays a crucial role in confirming pregnancy, assessing the fetal position (whether the pregnancy is inside or outside the uterus), and estimating the expected due date.

When Should You Do an Early Pregnancy Scan?
An early pregnancy scan is ideally recommended between 6 and 10 weeks of pregnancy.
Why Timing Matters?
It is crucial to schedule an early pregnancy scan between 6 and 10 weeks, as this is the ideal time to confirm fetal viability and fetal position (whether the pregnancy is intrauterine or ectopic). This scan also helps with accurate dating of pregnancy, identifying multiple pregnancies, and detecting early complications, enabling appropriate medical care at the right time.

Everything you need to know about how the scan is performed and how to prepare.
How Is the Early Pregnancy Scan Performed?
An early pregnancy scan is usually performed using the transvaginal route, as this provides significantly better visibility of the fetus at this early stage.
The Procedure:
A thin transvaginal probe is covered with a sterile probe cover, and a generous amount of lubricating gel is applied over it.
The patient is asked to lie comfortably on the examination table with their legs gently apart.
The probe is gently inserted into the vagina, and high-quality, real-time images of the baby are displayed on the monitor.
Preparation
There is no special or complicated preparation required for an early pregnancy scan. However, to ensure your comfort, it is recommended to:
Wear comfortable clothing
Loose-fitting, comfortable clothes are best for ease of examination.
Empty your bladder fully
Unlike some other scans, an empty bladder is preferred for a transvaginal ultrasound before the scan begins.
Note: You can eat and drink water as usual. There are absolutely no dietary restrictions prior to this scan.

What Does an Early Pregnancy Scan Detect?
During an early pregnancy scan, the following structures and parameters are assessed:
-
Gestational sac (1/5)
A fluid-filled sac within the uterus that contains the developing embryo, usually visible from 4–5 weeks of pregnancy.
-
Yolk sac (2/5)
A small circular structure inside the gestational sac that provides early nourishment to the embryo.
-
Fetal pole (3/5)
An early form of the fetus, usually visible from 5–6 weeks.
-
Fetal heartbeat (4/5)
Typically detectable from 6–8 weeks, confirming fetal viability.
-
CRL (Crown–Rump Length) (5/5)
Measurement from the head to the bottom of the embryo, used to calculate gestational age and estimate the due date.
Fetal Heart Rate in Early Pregnancy
Monitoring the fetal heartbeat is a key milestone. These values help assess normal fetal development.
While the gestational sac, yolk sac, and fetal pole can be visualised on ultrasound as early as 6 weeks of pregnancy, the fetal heartbeat may not always be detectable at this stage.
In some women, the heartbeat is seen only around 7 weeks, which is considered completely normal. A repeat scan may be advised to confirm fetal cardiac activity.
📅
Why Might a Follow-Up Early Pregnancy Scan Be Needed?
A follow-up scan may be routinely recommended if:
- 🔍 The fetal heartbeat is not detected yet
- 🔍 The fetal pole is not clearly visible
- 🔍 Gestational dating is uncertain
Follow-up scans are typically scheduled 7–14 days later to allow for further fetal development.
Is an Early Pregnancy Scan Painful?
An early pregnancy scan is usually not painful. Since it is mostly performed via the transvaginal route, some women may experience mild discomfort, but it is generally very well tolerated.
Note: It is crucial to get your pregnancy scans done by a Fetal Medicine Specialist. Their advanced expertise ensures not only accurate results but also a gentle, comfortable experience for the mother.
Apart from assessing the baby’s structural organs, the anomaly scan also checks
Amniotic Fluid
Measuring fluid levels to ensure the baby has enough cushion and space to move.
Placenta
Checking position, maturity, and blood flow to ensure proper nutrient delivery.
Umbilical Cord
Verifying the presence of 3 vessels (2 arteries, 1 vein) for healthy circulation.
Fetal Biometry & Estimated Weight
We measure key growth parameters including BPD, HC, AC, FL to evaluate growth rate, body proportions, development, and estimated weight.
FAQs
Quick answers to your most common questions.
Yes. Early pregnancy scans use ultrasound sound waves and are completely safe for both the mother and the baby.
An early pregnancy scan is typically performed between 6 and 10 weeks of gestation.
In most cases, pregnancy can be confirmed from around 6 weeks of gestation. However, in some women, it may take 7–8 weeks for the fetal heartbeat to be visualised. In such cases, a repeat scan may be recommended.
Why the Early Pregnancy Scan Is Important
An early pregnancy scan confirms pregnancy, ensures proper implantation, provides accurate gestational age, and helps detect abnormalities such as ectopic pregnancy. This allows timely medical guidance and reassurance during the early stages of pregnancy.
Although home pregnancy tests can detect pregnancy hormones, only an ultrasound scan can confirm an intrauterine pregnancy and fetal viability. Hence, it is important not to miss an early pregnancy scan.
Limitations of an Early Pregnancy Scan
In very early scans, the fetal heartbeat may not be detectable
Dating accuracy depends on the visibility of early fetal structures
Structural anomalies cannot be detected at this stage, as it is too early in pregnancy
Abnormalities Detected in an Early Pregnancy Scan
An early pregnancy scan is a crucial diagnostic tool that may help detect the following conditions:
Ectopic pregnancy
A condition in which the embryo implants outside the uterus, most commonly in the fallopian tube. This requires immediate medical attention, as it can lead to serious internal bleeding and other complications if not treated promptly.
Non-viable pregnancy
Refers to the absence of a fetal heartbeat when it is expected. If a heartbeat is not detected around 8–9 weeks, doctors usually advise a repeat scan after one week. If the heartbeat is still not visualised, the pregnancy is considered non-viable and cannot be continued.
Blighted ovum
Occurs when a gestational sac develops without an embryo. In such cases, the pregnancy is non-viable and cannot be continued.
