NIPT Test in Chennai – Advanced Non-Invasive Prenatal Screening
Accurate first-trimester non-invasive prenatal screening to detect chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus.
At Jammi Scans, NIPT testing and consultation are guided by FMF-certified fetal medicine specialist Dr. Deepthi Jammi, ensuring that parents are well informed.

What Is NIPT (Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing)?
NIPT stands for Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing. It is a simple blood test that is done to assess the baby’s risk of having chromosomal abnormalities.
From around 10 weeks of pregnancy, small fragments of the baby’s DNA can be found in the mother’s blood. NIPT analyzes the cell-free fetal DNA (cfDNA) that circulates in the mother’s blood as it contains the baby's genetic material.
However, NIPT is a screening test, not a diagnostic test. This means it cannot 100% guarantee whether the baby has specific chromosomal abnormalities, but it provides risk results (high or low), helping expectant parents and healthcare providers plan the next steps.

When Is the NIPT Test Done During Pregnancy?
Ideally, NIPT is performed from as early as 10 weeks of pregnancy. This is because, from around 10 weeks of pregnancy, the amount of fetal DNA in the mother’s bloodstream is sufficient for accurate analysis.
Benefits of early testing include:
Early detection of chromosomal abnormalities
Benefits of early testing include:
Benefits of early testing include:
Reduced anxiety for expecting parents
When Is NIPT Recommended?
Although NIPT is not a routine screening test recommended for all expectant mothers, it is advised for mothers with a higher risk of chromosomal abnormalities, including:
Abnormal NT Scan results
Abnormal double marker results
Previous pregnancy or child affected by a chromosomal abnormality
Maternal age 35 years or above
Family history of genetic disorders
What Conditions Can NIPT Detect?
NIPT primarily screens for common chromosomal abnormalities including:
Chromosomal Abnormalities
- Down syndrome (Trisomy 21): Extra copy of chromosome 21
- Edwards syndrome (Trisomy 18): Extra copy of chromosome 18
- Patau syndrome (Trisomy 13): Extra copy of chromosome 13
Sex chromosome abnormalities
- Screens for variations in the sex chromosomes (X and Y).
How Accurate Is NIPT?
NIPT is considered highly accurate in calculating the baby’s risk of having chromosomal abnormalities. Detection rates are approximately:
(Trisomy 21)
(Trisomy 18)
(Trisomy 13)
How Is the NIPT Test Performed?
NIPT is a simple blood test. Before the test, Dr. Deepthi Jammi provides personalized counselling and explains everything about the test. An ultrasound may be performed to check the baby’s wellbeing.
A small sample of blood is safely and swiftly drawn from the mother’s arm by our trained professionals.
The blood sample is then securely sent to a specialized laboratory for advanced genetic analysis.
When Will I Get the NIPT Results?
Ideally, it takes around 7 to 14 days for comprehensive NIPT results to be processed and made available to you.
Benefits of NIPT
Early diagnosis
Since the test is carried out around 10 weeks of pregnancy, it allows for early diagnosis of certain chromosomal conditions, helping expectant parents and healthcare providers make informed decisions about further evaluation or monitoring if required.
Completely non-invasive and safe
As NIPT is a simple non-invasive maternal blood test, it is considered very safe for both the mother and the baby.
Very high accuracy
NIPT is highly accurate and provides a high detection rate for common chromosomal conditions such as Down syndrome (Trisomy 21), Trisomy 18, and Trisomy 13.
When Is NIPT Recommended?
Although NIPT is not a routine screening test recommended for all expectant mothers, it is advised for mothers with a higher risk of chromosomal abnormalities, including:
Uterine Arteries
Evaluates the blood supply flowing directly from the mother to the placenta.
Umbilical Artery
Monitors the essential blood flow traveling from the placenta to the baby.
Middle Cerebral Artery (MCA)
Measures the critical blood flow circulating within the baby’s brain.
Ductus Venosus
Assesses the blood flow specifically within the fetal circulation system.

Limitations of NIPT
While NIPT is highly accurate, it is important to understand that it has certain clinical limitations:
Screening Test, Not Diagnostic
NIPT is a screening test, not a diagnostic test. This means it can only estimate the baby’s risk (low, moderate, high) and cannot provide definite, conclusive answers such as positive or negative.
Cannot Detect All Defects
NIPT cannot detect all possible genetic anomalies or birth defects present.
No Structural Detection
It cannot detect physical or structural abnormalities in the baby (which requires an ultrasound).
Confirmation Required
Positive results must always be confirmed with invasive diagnostic testing like CVS or amniocentesis.
FAQs
Quick answers to your most common questions.
Yes. NIPT is a simple maternal blood test that is completely safe for both the mother and the baby.
NIPT can detect the risk of Down syndrome as early as 10 weeks of pregnancy.
No. While NIPT is an accurate screening test, it requires diagnostic testing such as CVS or amniocentesis to confirm the presence of a chromosomal abnormality.
No. NIPT is not a diagnostic test but a screening test, and it only screens for certain chromosomal abnormalities. It cannot detect structural abnormalities, neural tube defects, or many other genetic conditions.
If NIPT results show a high risk, your fetal medicine specialist may recommend further invasive tests including CVS and amniocentesis to confirm the diagnosis.
