Estimated Fetal Weight (EFW) Calculator
Estimated Fetal Weight EFW is one of the important measurements that are taken during ultrasound scans to estimate the fetal weight in order to ensure the health of the fetus. During an ultrasound, a set of measurements such as head circumference (HC), biparietal diameter (BPD), abdominal circumference (AC), and femur length (FL) are taken in order to calculate the EFW.
What is Estimated Fetal Weight?
Estimated Fetal Weight, EFW is the average weight of the fetus at a particular point. EFW is typically calculated at least 3 times during routine ultrasound checkup for a pregnant mother with low pregnancy risk. It is used to monitor the baby’s growth and development and ensure that the growth is in line with the baby’s gestational age.
How to use the calculator?
In order to get accurate results, it is important to enter the right measurements of the following:
- HC (Head circumference) as the name suggests is the measurement of the widest part of the baby’s head.
- BPD (Biparietal diameter), the measurement of the difference between two sides of the baby’s skull.
- AC (Abdominal circumference), the measurement of the baby’s belly region
- FL (Femur length), the measurement of the baby’s femur or thigh bone.
All these measurements are important to calculate the estimated fetal weight.
