Fertile window
Fertile window is the estimated days where you have high chances to get pregnant. Ideally, 5 days before ovulation, the day of ovulation and the day after ovulation.
For those trying to get pregnant, it is recommended to have unprotected intercourse during this time to increase the chances of conception.
Since we cannot accurately predict the day of ovulation, it is recommended to have intercurse during the fertile window. This is because, once the egg is released from the ovary, it can only stay viable for up to 24 hours.
But sperm can stay on a women’s reproductive tract for up to 5 days. Hence, having unprotected intercourse a few days before ovulation makes sperm stay in the system to fuse with the egg in order to increase the chances of pregnancy.
Ovulation
Ovulation is the time when the ovary releases an egg. If a couple have unprotected intercourse around this time, there are high chances of conception. Signs of ovulation include:
- Changes in cervical mucus
- Breast tenderness
- Rise in basal body temperature
Apart from using a digital calculator to predict your valuation, you can also check for a few other metrics, such as:
Basal body temperature: It is the temperature of your body as soon as you wake up. Typically, around the time of ovulation, the temperature of your body increases a little.
Cervical mucus: Cervical mucus or vaginal discharge is common during your menstrual cycle. Around the time of ovulation, cervical mucus can be clear, stretchy, and slippery.
OPK: Ovulation Predictor Kits work just like a urine pregnancy test kit. But these ovulation kits come in a pack of 3 or 5. Ovulation predictor kits are sensitive to LH or luteinizing hormone that surges around the time of ovulation. So if two lines in the ovulation kit are darker, it means LH hormone is rising indicating ovulation.
Having intercourse around the time of ovulation can drastically increase your chances of conception.
Next period: This is your next predicted period. If the released egg isn’t fertilized by the sperm, you will get your next period around this day.
Pregnancy test day: If you didn’t get your period yet, it is high time to take a pregnancy test. Although some high-sensitive pregnancy kits can detect pregnancy much earlier, it is still recommended to take the test at least a day after your missed period for accurate results.
Tips:
- Take the test with the first urine of the day. This is because, as the day progresses, we tend to drink more water and fluids, leading to diluted HCG content. This can also result in inaccurate results. Hence it is suggested to take the test with the first urine of the day.
- Check for the expiry date of the kit and ensure to read the label. Each and every pregnancy kit is different, and it is important to read the directions before use.
