Anomaly Scan in Chennai – Specialist-Led Level 2 Fetal Anatomy Scan
Expert TIFFA Scan (18-22 Weeks) by Dr. Deepthi Jammi • Advanced GE Voluson Technology • Same-Day Reports
What Is an Anomaly Scan? (18–20 Weeks)
The Anomaly Scan, also known as the 20-Week Scan, Level 2 Ultrasound, or TIFFA Scan, is one of the most comprehensive prenatal scans during pregnancy.
This mid-pregnancy ultrasound scan evaluates your baby's internal structures, including limbs, spine, brain, heart, and major organs to detect any structural abnormalities.
When Should You Do the Anomaly Scan?
The Anomaly Scan is ideally done between 18–22 weeks of pregnancy. This time window allows the best visibility of your baby's organs and structures, enabling doctors to accurately assess development and identify any potential risk of birth defects or abnormalities.
Why Timing Matters?
18–22 weeks is the right time frame because, after 22–24 weeks, visibility decreases due to reduced space in the uterus, baby's position, and increased calcification of fetal bones. Taking the scan earlier than 18 weeks may not give comprehensive clarity.

Limitations of Anomaly Scan – What the Scan May Not Detect
Understanding the scope and limitations helps set realistic expectations.
1. Abnormalities That May Appear Later
Certain issues develop only in the third trimester and may not be visible during an Anomaly Scan at 18–22 weeks, such as some heart defects, bowel or kidney obstructions, and club foot.
2. Conditions Not Visible on Ultrasound
Some structural issues cannot be reliably detected, such as fusion of fingers/toes, absence of anal opening, absence of ear canals, and deep isolated cleft palate.
3. Functional & Genetic Limitations
The scan checks structure, not function. Brain function cannot be assessed, many genetic conditions may not show on ultrasound, and chromosomal markers detect only 50–70% of abnormalities. Your doctor may suggest tests such as NIPT, CVS, or amniocentesis if required.
4. Factors That Affect Visibility
Clarity depends on baby's position, maternal body type (including obesity), amniotic fluid levels, previous abdominal surgery scars, and shadowing from fetal parts.
5. Multiple Pregnancy Challenges
In twin or triplet pregnancies, overlapping fetal parts can restrict visibility.
6. Heart Scan Limitations
Even a detailed fetal echo may miss minor cardiac issues such as small holes (<5 mm).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Quick answers to common questions about anomaly scan.
Yes, absolutely. The anomaly scan uses sound waves, not radiation. It is completely safe for both mother and baby. Ultrasound technology has been used safely for over 50 years in pregnancy care.
Dr. Deepthi Jammi will explain the findings in detail and guide you through the next steps, which may include follow-up targeted scans, fetal echocardiography, genetic counseling, or specialist referrals if required.
A normal anomaly scan significantly reduces the risk of major structural issues. However, it cannot rule out all conditions, especially functional or genetic disorders that may develop later or are not visible on ultrasound.
Not at all. The anomaly scan is performed transabdominally (through the belly), and most mothers do not experience any pain. You might feel slight pressure, but it is usually negligible.
There is no special preparation needed. You can eat and drink normally before the scan. No dietary restrictions or fasting required. Just wear comfortable clothing.
Yes. An anomaly scan is also called a Level 2 scan, TIFFA scan, or 20-week scan. All these terms refer to the same comprehensive fetal anatomy ultrasound.
An anomaly scan can identify certain physical markers that may suggest a higher risk for Down syndrome or other genetic conditions. However, it cannot confirm these conditions. Tests such as NIPT, CVS, or amniocentesis may be recommended for confirmation.
Although the doctor can see the baby's gender during an anomaly scan, in India the disclosure of fetal sex is strictly prohibited under the PC & PNDT Act.
At Jammi Scans, we provide anomaly scan reports immediately within a few minutes of completing the ultrasound. You'll receive both printed and digital copies via WhatsApp.
Yes! At Jammi Scans, husbands and family members are welcome inside the scan room to witness the beautiful moment of seeing your baby during the ultrasound.
