NT Scan in Chennai – First trimester screening
Highly accurate NT (Nuchal Transluency) Scans performed by Fetal Medicine Specialist Dr. Deepthi Jammi.

NT Scan (11 and 13 weeks)
The NT Scan (Nuchal Translucency Scan) is an important first-trimester ultrasound that helps assess the baby’s risk of chromosomal abnormalities such as Down Syndrome and Edwards Syndrome.
It measures the thickness of a normal fluid-filled space (nuchal translucency) at the back of the baby’s neck.
At Jammi Scans, Dr. Deepthi Jammi, expert FMF-Certified Fetal Medicine Specialist performs your NT Scan and provides accurate results.
Fetus in the 3rd month of pregnancy on an ultrasound scan - Normal vs Abnormal NT
Normal NT Scan Value
A Nuchal Transluency value under 3 mm is considered normal. Any value above 3mm, requires further testing such as NIPT, Amniocentesis or CVS.
What is the Double Marker Test in Pregnancy?
What is the Double Marker Test in Pregnancy?
A double marker test is a blood test that is usually done along with an NT scan. This test measures for two substances in the blood:
- Free Beta hCG
- PAPP-A (Pregnancy-Associated Plasma Protein A) d
-
Nasal bone (1/5)
Checks for the presence and length of the nasal bone, which helps in assessing the risk of certain chromosomal conditions.
-
Placental position (2/5)
Checks position, maturity and blood flow.
-
Amniotic fluid (3/5)
Measures fluid levels to ensure the baby has enough cushion and space to move.
-
Fetal heartbeat (4/5)
Measures fetal heartbeat and helps assess the baby’s overall well-being.
-
Fetal Biometry (5/5)
Measures key growth parameters including BPD, HC, AC, FL to evaluate growth rate, body proportions, development, and estimated weight.
- If done earlier, the baby is too small to obtain reliable measurements.
- If done later, the fluid behind the baby’s neck may get reabsorbed, making the results inaccurate.
- Check the viability of the baby
- Check the baby’s position
- Count the number of babies
- Check the presence of fetal heart rate
- Estimate the baby’s due date
- Down syndrome risk screening
- Fetal nasal bone presence
- Nuchal translucency thickness
- Ductus venosus & tricuspid flow
- Brain, face, spine & limbs
- Heart (4-chamber view)
- Stomach, kidneys, bladder
- Placenta position & cord
- Estimated fetal weight (EFW)
- Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI)
- Fetal position & movements
- Placental maturity
- Umbilical artery PI/RI
- MCA Doppler for anemia risk
- Uterine artery notching
- Combined with Growth Scan
Jammi Scans: Accurate NT Scan in Chennai
NB (Nasal Bone) or NT Scan is a vital first-trimester screening. It closely measures the fluid behind the baby’s neck to assess chances of chromosomal abnormalities.
Too Early
Before 11 WeeksMeasurements are unreliable as the baby’s size is too small for accurate assessment.
Best Time
11 weeks - 13 weeks 6 daysWhy Timing Matters?
This specific window ensures the most precise fluid measurement and reliable risk calculation.
Too Late
After 14 WeeksThe nuchal fluid may get absorbed naturally by the baby, reducing the accuracy of results.

How Is the Scan Performed?
Ideally, an NT scan uses a transabdominal ultrasound procedure. But in some cases, the fetal medicine specialist may opt for transvaginal ultrasound procedure too. It is a safe, painless, and non-invasive process.
Abdominal route:
A thin layer of lubricant gel is applied to the abdomen.
The transducer or the probe is gently glided over the abdomen.
Real-time images of the baby are displayed on the monitor.
Transvaginal route:
A probe cover or a condom is used to cover the transvaginal probe.
The patient is asked to lie down on the examination table with knees bent and legs wide open.
The probe is covered with a thin layer of lubricant gel.
The probe is gently inserted in the vagina.
Real-time images of the baby are displayed on the monitor.
At Jammi Scans, Dr. Deepthi Jammi personally performs all NT Scans and interprets results. She carefully examines the baby and looks for any abnormalities. Some parents opt for a 3D NT scan to see the baby's facial features more clearly
How to Prepare?
Comfortable Clothing
Wear comfortable clothing.
Full Bladder
In some cases, you will be asked to moderately fill your bladder and in some cases, you will be asked to pass urine and empty your bladder before the scan.
No Fasting Required
No special preparation is required before an NT Scan. You can eat and drink water as usual. There are no dietary restrictions.
Abnormalities revealed in an NT Scan
The primary role of an NT scan is to assess the baby’s risks of having chromosomal abnormalities such as Down Syndrome and Patau Syndrome.
NT Scan measures the fluid behind the baby’s neck also called nuchal translucency to assess the baby’s risks of chromosomal abnormalities.
Apart from this, NT scan also checks for:
Accuracy of NT Scan
FAQs
Quick answers to your most common questions.
NT scan normal range must be less than 3 mm.
NT scan is carried out around 11 to 14 weeks of gestation to measure the amount of fluid behind the baby’s neck. NT scan is performed to check if the baby’s chances of having chromosomal abnormalities including down syndrome, and trisomy 18.
Anomaly Scan on the other hand is performed around 20 to 24 weeks of gestation. In an anomaly scan, you see the baby and the doctor checks if the baby has any anomalies in the baby. This means, the scan checks if the baby has any growth defects.
No. It is recommended to not skip NT scan or other prenatal scans and appointments to ensure the baby’s health.
NT scans are usually not painful.
NT Scan results are usually provided on the same day. The double marker test report will be available within a week after taking the test.
Double marker test is usually carried out along with NT Scan to assess the baby’s risk of having chromosomal abnormalities. Although it is not mandatory, healthcare experts recommended getting an NT Scan and Double Marker Test together to improve the accuracy of the results. This is because the accuracy of NT Scan when done alone is 70-85%. Whereas, when combined with a double marker test, the accuracy goes up to 90-95%.
Why is the NT Scan Important for Prenatal Care?
An NT scan helps with:
Early risk assessment:
Helps assess the risk of chromosomal abnormalities at an early stage of pregnancy.
Timely medical intervention:
Performed between 11 and 13 weeks, enabling early pregnancy screening and timely intervention for further testing if required.
Informed decision-making:
Provides valuable information that helps parents and doctors plan further care.
“At Jammi Scans, Dr. Deepthi Jammi provides personal counselling after each scan and guides patients through the next steps.”
Limitations of NT Scan
NT Scan Is a Screening Test, Not a Diagnostic Test
The NT scan is a screening test and not a diagnostic test. This means it can assess the baby’s risk of chromosomal abnormalities, but it cannot confirm with 100% certainty whether the baby has an abnormality or not.
Abnormalities That Develop Later in Pregnancy
Certain abnormalities like major cardiac issues, bowel obstructions, congenital diaphragmatic, hernia, hydrocephalus, microcephaly, club foot, kidney or intestinal obstruction may evolve during the later phase of pregnancy. The evolving variations cannot be diagnosed in an anomaly scan. Your fetal expert may recommend a repeat scan between 24 and 25 weeks of gestation in such situations.
Timing Is Crucial
The NT scan must be performed strictly between 11 weeks 0 days and 13 weeks 6 days to ensure accurate results.
Increased NT doesn't always mean abnormality
An increased NT measurement does not always indicate a chromosomal abnormality, but it suggests a higher risk and may require further tests such as NIPT, Amniocentesis or CVS.
Assesses only the risk of certain chromosomal abnormalities
The NT scan mainly assesses risk for certain chromosomal conditions and may not detect all birth defects.
Fetal position is crucial to ensure accuracy
Accuracy can vary based on fetal position and image quality during the scan.
Important: Despite these limitations, the NT scan remains one of the most valuable tools in prenatal assessment. At Jammi Scans, Dr. Deepthi Jammi uses advanced ultrasound technology and specialised expertise to provide the most accurate evaluation possible.
